Diverse in nature, students and academics, Eugene Lang College, the undergraduate, liberal arts division of the New School University, is designed to generate a unique academic experience.

Remaining consistent to its founding philosophy of innovative educational approaches, Eugene Lang College grew out of a highly progressive Freshman Year Program developed at the New School in 1973.

The school was originally recognized as the Seminar College, reflecting the style of teaching adopted by its faculty. In 1985, the College was renamed Eugene Lang College, following a generous endowment from philanthropist Eugene Lang and his family.

Today, the College enrolls over 887 students and offers intensive liberal arts study as well as a faculty committed to teaching undergraduates in an interdisciplinary context. The curriculum consists of 13 concentrations -- Arts in Context; Cultural Studies and Media; Dance; Education Studies; Literature; Philosophy; Psychology; Religious Studies; Science, Technology and Society/Quantitative Reason; Social and Historical Inquiry; Theatre; Urban Studies; and Writing.

Specialized Degree Programs
Eugene Lang College students are encouraged to draw upon the resources of the entire University in designing their programs of study. In addition to the Bachelor of Arts degree, the College offers the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in conjunction with Parsons School of Design and the New School Jazz & Contemporary Music Program. Accelerated Bachelor's/Master's degree programs are available through the Graduate Faculty in liberal studies. Bachelor's/Master's programs are also offered in media studies and secondary school education with The New School and in urban policy analysis and management with the Robert J. Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy.

The Faculty
Our faculty of accomplished scholars, writers and theater directors actively engage students in an intellectual, thought-provoking educational process. Over 90% of the faculty have a Ph.D. or equivalent. Faculty serve as both academic advisors and mentors. Also, faculty from other divisions of the University teach courses in the College. Students benefit greatly from the personal and individualized attention they receive from our student/faculty ratio of 10:1.

The Advising System
Our Advising System enables students to develop the curriculum that best fits their educational interests. Entering first-year students choose one of their courses during the summer before they arrive, and the instructor for that course becomes their academic adviser through sophomore year. In the junior and senior years, students are assigned an advisor in their area of concentration.
