Course Description
From subway tunnels to metaphorical lands of the dead, the underground has long been a site of fascination and anxiety, offering refuge from the surface world, room for subversion and encounters with those who make the underworld their home. This writing and research course examines both real and imagined journeys underground, using a variety of texts that include selections from Bill Ayers' memoir of the Weather Underground, Jennifer Toth's The Mole People, and Sukhdev Sandhu's multimedia exploration of nocturnal London. Regular writing assignments build towards a final research essay in which students explore the phenomenon and consequences of going underground in a location of their own choosing.
