Course Description
This course investigates the role of biology and biotechnology in relation to infectious diseases in the context of economic and social development, human rights, and conflict. The course analyzes four infectious diseases that have escaped elimination (cholera, malaria, tuberculosis, and AIDS) and students explore the very neglected diseases (dengue, sleeping sickness, and others). Students learn the biology behind these diseases on a “need-to-know” basis and read from a variety of literature sources and Web-based databases. The focus is on appropriate technology and delivery for diagnosis, surveillance, prevention, and treatment. Some class sessions involve situational dilemmas solved through collaborations involving individuals with expertise in economics, politics, and cultural studies. This is an analytical writing intensive course. This course satisfies an Elective Requirement for the IS major.
