Course Description
In the early fall, students learn the basics of fixed-seat rowing and small-boat seamanship at the the Village Community Boathouse on Pier 40. Later in the semester, students participate in the construction of one or more wooden rowing gigs--vessels specifically designed for the waters of New York Harbor. Via readings and a series of lunchtime guest lecturers, the course also offers an introduction to harbor geography, estuary ecology, and the political processes that are shaping the contemporary urban waterfront.
