Course Description
Ethnomathematics is a new field that combines ideas and methodologies from mathematics, anthropology, history and education. It explores the role of mathematics in diverse cultures, seeking to widen our view of what mathematics is, its history, and how it is practiced. In this class we will compare differing concepts of time, space, and relationships, as well as examine traditions of religious practice, building and design. (This course satisfies the second math requirement for the Interdisciplinary Science major).
